South Africa, Day 6

Saturday was one of my favorite days. We went horseback-riding--I think this cost us $17 a person, and it was like a private excursion. We went to this little ranch called Mkulu Kei and the owners took us through the stables, and told us about each of the horses, and helped us pick out the best one to ride. Then the husband and wife, and three little black boys went for a ride. There is a township close to this ranch, and this couple mentors these young boys, teaching them how to take care of horses and train them. They hope that they will be able to use these skills later in life to get jobs and have some kind of future. There is so much pverty there, they need any opportunity they can get to have a future. It's a wonderful thing they are doing, teaching them to work, and giving them something to do to keep them out of trouble. The boys LOVE it, even the ones that couldn't ride yet ran along the road following us. They are training one of the boys to be a jockey--they are actually quite small people, and they say this little guy has a lot of talent and can do really well. He can make ten times the amount of money that stable hands can, and they are going to send him away to a jockey school. It's really inspiring what they are doing for him.

Anyway, we rode for a while through the fields and then came to the beach and got to gallop with the horses. Ryan totally fell off the horse!!! Thank goodness we were on the sand, he didn't get hurt at all.

This little place was a resort town and SO beautiful. My parents drove Cecily down to the beach while they waited for us and played in the tide pools and had a great time.

After the ride, we came back to one of the hotels, and had lunch overlooking the beach. This was some of the most beautiful scenery ever. LOVED it! I could've stayed all day, but we had to get back, cuz my parents were feeding the missionaries.

They always have a special dinner when one is about to go home-- they make his requests, and then play a game--" how well do you know Elder ______." It was fun to get to know the missionaries and be a part of what my parents have been doing.
